Safely Driving On Country Roads
Driving in rural areas differs slightly from driving in suburban and urban areas. Although traffic rules remain the same throughout VIC and NSW, it’s an excellent idea to consider several driving tips if you are planning a road trip or going for a country drive. Here are some essential guidelines from LTrent Driving School.
1. Always Follow the Speed Limits
Whenever you’re driving in rural areas, it’s advisable to stick to posted speed limits. This will help you to react correctly to traffic, turns, dips in the road, and wildlife.
2. Be Prepared For Wildlife
Kangaroos and other creatures are a common concern on most rural roads. Look out for signs denoting the presence of wildlife passage, and use your high beams when permitted to see as much of your surroundings as possible when driving at night.
If an animal is blocking your path, immediately brake. Don’t swerve; running off the road is more likely to cause serious injury than hitting the animal.
3. Be Cautious on Gravel Roads and Unsealed Roads
Dirt, unsealed, and gravel roads are prevalent in rural areas, so it’s important to be extra careful when driving on these surfaces. To stay safe, it is advisable to lower your speed, stay alert, and create room for enhanced stopping distance between cars. Do not over-adjust your vehicle or overreact if you start sliding. Be mindful of weather conditions, as rain or mud can make these roads slippery and hazardous.
4. Avoid Aggressive Or Illegal Passing
Never try to pass another car or a road train in a no-pass zone – this is illegal! Low visibility makes these situations very dangerous. Illegally or aggressively passing is not a good idea and could cause a fatal accident.
5. Pull Over If You Feel Tired
Fatigued driving accidents typically occur between 10 pm and 6 am, so avoid being on the roads during this time. Get adequate sleep (7-8 hours daily) and take regular breaks while travelling long distances by car.
If you begin feeling tired while behind the wheel, find a safe stopping place and take a break. Do not leave your car parked on the roadside, as it can pose a risk to other drivers, especially if you have turned off the vehicle’s lights.
