About Wongawallan, QLD
Wongawallan is a rural locality situated in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The area is characterised by its mountainous terrain, with most farming and residential development occurring in the creek valleys, while the hilltops remain largely undeveloped. Wongawallan Creek and Tamborine Creek are the main waterways in the region, converging near Welch Pioneer Park. The locality is accessible via the Tamborine-Oxenford Road, which serves as the main thoroughfare through the area.
Historically, the area was initially known as Mt Goulburn, named after Henry Goulburn by surveyor Dixon. It was later renamed Wongawallan, believed to derive from an Aboriginal word meaning “pigeon water.” However, another account suggests it was named after an Aboriginal man known as “Peter” who was involved in an incident with a settler named John Wilkinson in 1876.
The population of Wongawallan was recorded at 1,273 people in the 2016 census. The suburb does not have any schools within its boundaries; the nearest primary and secondary educational institutions are located in the neighbouring areas of Upper Coomera and Tamborine Mountain. The community enjoys a peaceful, rural lifestyle with a focus on agriculture and conservation, making it a tranquil retreat within the bustling Gold Coast region.
