Steps Involved In Becoming A Driving Instructor
Step 1

Step 2
We welcome you to come to our office in North Ryde (or we can organise a phone interview if you’re not in Sydney). This stage will allow you to gain greater clarity and insight surrounding the role, and is an opportunity for us to connect and make sure its the right fit for both parties.
Step 3
Obtain your Letter of Eligibility from Service NSW. More information available in the FAQ section below.
Step 4
Obtain a Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics (this is the qualification that all NSW professional driving instructors must have). This can be done through Trent Education, our tailored Certificate IV program where you’ll be instructed by LTrent’s Master Driver Trainers.

1. How do I get a Letter of Eligibility?
You’ll need to fill out the ‘Application for Licence under Driving Instructors Act 1992’ and bring it to your local Service NSW (with the medical check section filled out by your GP).
You’ll also need to bring proof of identity, your full drivers licence (that you’ve held for three out of the last four years), a Working With Children Check number, and four passport size photographs.

2. Am I eligible to be a driving instructor?
You must be at least 21 years old, hold a full NSW licence (for 3 out of the last four years), and have a valid Working With Children Check number.
3. How long is the training?
When you’re doing the extremely important work of teaching young people to drive, you want to be sure you’re well prepared and ready to have the lives of others in your hands. The Certificate IV program is done partly independently through online modules with in-car assessments. How long it takes is really dependent on how often, and how much time you’re willing to dedicate to the training. The average time to complete the course is 2-6 months.
4. How often do I have to work?
Entirely up to you! You give us your available shifts, and we’ll only schedule lessons during those times. That’s the beauty of being a franchise.
5. How much will I earn?
LTrent’s remuneration system is the best in our industry. A small infrastructure fee will go towards funding all of the support you receive. More information will be provided in your one-on-one interview.
Being business savvy is important to consistent success in our industry, through following our sales techniques as well as teaching curriculum our instructors are able to earn as much as six figure salaries and revel in the success of an independent franchise. At LTrent, our fleet is the most modern in the industry – it’s a requirement that all of our instructor’s cars are less than four years old and fitted with dual brakes (trust us, you’ll want them).

What Do You Need to Do?
A driving instructor is anyone who teaches unlicensed people to drive a car on a public or open road, either for profit or as part of their trade. In Victoria, driving instructors must have a Driving Instructor Authority to teach a person to drive. However, this certification does not include motorcycles, heavy vehicles, or vehicles that have seating for more than 12 adults including the driver. For these cases, you’ll need different certifications.
Requirements To Become A Driving Instructor In Victoria
To become a driving instructor in Victoria, you have to meet certain criteria:
- Hold a full Australian driver’s licence;
- Complete the Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics, accompanied by a letter advising if the training was completed on a manual or automatic car;
- Meet medical standards;
- Have no serious or frequent traffic offences;
- If you intend to be advising students under 18 years of age, you will also need a current Working with Children Check.
Steps Involved In Becoming A Driving Instructor
If you meet the criteria, you will have to apply for a licence with the Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria, which is the institution that issues the authorisation for driving instructors. There are essentially 5 steps to becoming a licenced driving instructor in Victoria:
Step 1
Complete the National Police Checking Service (NPCS) informed consent form for the criminal police check.
Step 2
Complete a Driving Instructor Authority application form, and have the medical section completed by a doctor.
Step 3
Attach evidence of completing the Certificate IV course, which can either be the certificate itself or a letter from the training company. We provide the Certificate IV course through Trent Education.
Step 4
4. Attach two passport-sized colour photos and certified copies of identification documents:
- Driver’s licence;
- Primary evidence document;
- Secondary evidence document;
- Working with Children Check (if needed, issued by the Department of Justice)
