About Duntroon, ACT
Duntroon, located in Canberra, is home to the Royal Military College, Australia’s prestigious officer training institution. Established in 1911, Duntroon is deeply rooted in Australian military history. The suburb itself was originally part of the Duntroon Estate, owned by Robert Campbell. Campbell named the property after his ancestral home, Duntrune Castle, in Scotland. Over the years, the area has developed into a key site for Australia’s defence force, with the Royal Military College at its core.
The suburb also houses the historic Duntroon House, which now serves as the Officers’ Mess for the military college. This beautiful colonial building was central to Campbell’s estate and remains a significant landmark. Duntroon is not just about military training; it also features the Prisoner of War National Memorial, which includes the Changi Chapel, originally built by Australian and British POWs during World War II.
