New NSW Licence Conditions From 20 Nov 2017

What Is The Process Now?

Learners

  • Pass Drivers Knowledge Test (DKT)
  • Must be on L's for at least 10 months before attempting the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). You will receive a pass/fail result slip
  • HPT is valid for 15 months
  • Obtain 120 hours and be on L's for atleast 12 months before attempting the Driving Test 

Provisional P1 

  • Hold P1 licence for atleast 12 months before proceeding to P2 Licence 
  • No computer test is needed

Provisional P2

  • Hold P2 licence for atleast 24 months before proceeding to full licence 
  • No computer test is required
  • If a licence is suspended for poor driving behaviour, then 6 months will be added to the P2 tenure period

Existing Learner, P1, and P2 Drivers Before 20 Nov 2017

Learners

  • Pass DKT
  • Must be on L's for at least 10 months before attempting the Hazard Perception Test (HPT). You will receive a pass/fail result slip
  • HPT is valid for 15 months
  • Obtain 120 hours and be on L's for atleast 12 months before attempting the Driving Test 

Provisional P1 

  • Hold P1 licence for atleast 12 months before proceeding to P2 Licence 
  • Pass a HPT if you have not passed one when progressing from a Learner to P1 Licence

Provisional P2

  • Hold P2 licence for atleast 24 months before proceeding to full licence 
  • Existing P2 drivers must pass the Driver Qualification Test (DQT)
  • No change to the tenure period
  • However, if an existing P2 driver renews their licence after the 20th of Nov 2017 then the new conditions will apply. You will not need to do the DQT and will have an extension of 6 months each time you receive a suspension for dangerous driving
